  • UHF antenna mast (fixed frequency)

Follow these steps to set up your NESDR SMArt v5:

  1. Connect the Antenna Base: Attach the desired antenna mast (telescopic, 433MHz, or UHF) to the magnetic antenna base. The telescopic antenna is suitable for a wide range of frequencies, while the fixed-frequency masts are optimized for specific bands.
  2. Connect the SDR: Connect the SMA connector of the antenna base's RG58 cable to the female SMA input on the NESDR SMArt v5 SDR dongle. Ensure a secure connection.

4. Operating the NESDR SMArt v5

The NESDR SMArt v5 offers a broad frequency capability from 100kHz to 1.75GHz, with up to 3.2MHz of instantaneous bandwidth. This wide range allows for reception of various radio signals.

4.1. Signal Reception Capabilities

The NESDR SMArt v5 can be used for:

  • Broadcast AM/FM radio
  • Shortwave radio, CB radio
  • Public security radio, trunked radio
  • Air traffic control (ATC)
  • ACARS (Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System)
  • ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast) for plane tracking
  • AIS (Automatic Identification System) for ship tracking
  • POCSAG (Pagers)
  • NOAA and GOES weather satellites (for weather images)
  • Weather balloons, radiosondes
  • DAB radio, DVB-T video
  • Inmarsat, Iridium, and many other signals.

4.2. HF Reception

HF reception below 25MHz is achieved through direct sampling. For optimal HF performance, a suitable antenna is required. It is recommended to use a Balun One Nine (sold separately, product ID B08HGSYB7R or B00R09WHT6) to construct a DIY long wire or dipole antenna. While the direct sampling implementation in NESDR SMArt v5 is improved, an upconverter like the Ham It Up (sold separately, product ID B076CYK8XZ) is recommended for a more comprehensive HF experience.
