4. Gameplay Overview

Die Hard: The Nakatomi Heist is played over three acts, each with distinct objectives for both John McClane and the Thieves. The game proceeds in rounds, with players taking turns to perform actions based on their roles and cards.

4.1. John McClane's Role

As John McClane, your primary goal is to thwart the heist by completing specific objectives within each act and ultimately confronting Hans Gruber. You will manage a hand of action cards to move, sneak, attack, and interact with the environment. Careful card management is crucial, as running out of cards can lead to defeat.

4.2. The Thieves' Role

The Thief players work cooperatively to execute Hans Gruber's plan: cracking the vault and eliminating John McClane. They manage a shared pool of Thief Action Cards, using them to move their figures, attack McClane, and progress the lock-hacking process. Communication among Thief players is restricted during card selection, adding a layer of strategic challenge.

4.3. Game Acts

The game is divided into three acts, each representing a phase of the movie's narrative:

  • Act I: Focuses on initial infiltration and McClane's early attempts to understand the situation. The board is partially revealed.
  • Act II: The conflict escalates, with more areas of Nakatomi Plaza becoming accessible. Objectives become more complex for both sides.
  • Act III: The climax of the game, with the full board revealed and final objectives to be completed.

5. Core Mechanics

5.1. Action Cards

Both McClane and the Thieves use unique decks of action cards. These cards dictate available movements, attacks, and special abilities. Cards often have different effects depending on the current act of the game.

  • McClane's Cards: Represent his resourcefulness and dwindling health. Discarding cards due to damage or specific actions reduces his available options.
  • Thieves' Cards: Used for coordinated actions. The "middle-numbered" card selected by the thieves determines the actions performed, while other cards contribute to lock-hacking.

5.2. Combat and Dice Rolls

Combat is resolved using the Combat Die. When an attack is declared, players roll the die and compare the result to the required value on the action card or game effect. Line of sight and obstacles on the board can modify combat outcomes.

5.3. Lock Hacking

A central objective for the Thieves is to hack the vault's locks. This is achieved by playing Thief Action Cards with specific numbers that match the combination on the Lock Cards. The Lock Tracker helps monitor progress. The final lock can only be solved after specific game events occur.

6. Перамога ў гульні

The game concludes when one of the following conditions is met:

  • McClane Wins: If John McClane successfully completes all his objectives for Act III, which typically involves confronting and defeating Hans Gruber.
  • Thieves Win: If the Thieves successfully hack all the vault's locks and escape with the money, or if John McClane runs out of action cards and is eliminated.

7. Troubleshooting and Clarifications

This section addresses common questions and potential areas of confusion during gameplay:

  • Rule Complexity: The game has several specific rules that evolve across acts. It is recommended to read the rulebook thoroughly before the first play and refer to it frequently during initial games.
  • Thief Communication: Remember that Thief players cannot discuss strategy during the card selection phase. This is a deliberate design choice to simulate the difficulty of coordinating a heist under pressure.
  • McClane's Card Management: McClane's action card deck represents his endurance. Pay close attention to effects that force discards, as running out of cards is a loss condition.
  • Objective Tracking: Ensure all players are clear on the current act's objectives for both sides. Misunderstanding objectives can lead to incorrect play.
