6.1 Planning Your Lighting Layout

Before beginning installation, it is crucial to plan your lighting layout. Consider the areas you wish to illuminate, focusing on safety, security, and creating focal points to enhance your property's aesthetic appeal. Sketching out these areas will help define the scope of your project and ensure optimal placement of fixtures.

6.2 Transformer Selection and Placement

The transformer is the core of your low-voltage system, converting standard 120V household current to a safe 12V. Most residential projects can be accommodated by a 150W transformer. Always size up the transformer if you anticipate using over 75% of its capacity, allowing for future additions.

Locate a 120V power supply on your property to determine the transformer's placement. Consider sidewalks and driveways, as these may affect cable routing. The transformer must be mounted at least 12 inches above grade and 10 feet from any open water.

6.4 Connecting to the Transformer

Once all fixture connections are made to your main cable run, connect the main cable run into the transformer. This is a simple two-wire system; the orientation of the wires (which wire goes into the common vs. voltage tap) does not matter. Strip approximately 3/4 inch of insulation from the main cable wires. Insert one wire into the common tap and the other into the 12V tap. Use a flathead screwdriver to tighten each tap securely.

For longer runs (over approximately 100 feet), it is recommended to use the 15V tap on the transformer to ensure adequate voltage reaches the fixtures. The built-in driver technology in each fixture will regulate the voltage needed for optimal LED operation, provided the voltage at the fixture falls within the 10-15V range.

If you have multiple runs, place one strand from each run into the common tap and the other wire strand in the corresponding voltage tap, depending on the length of the run. Always identify each cable entering the wiring cavity using colored electrical tape to mark individual wires and cable runs on the inside of the transformer door.
